What happens when vents go unopened for years

The register is not the problem. It is the boot and the branch run behind it. Rodent droppings in an attic duct sit a few feet from your pillow. Nesting fiber breaks down and rides the supply air. Waiting turns a cleaning into a replacement, since mice chew flex jacket and the insulation collapses. Disconnected flex at a boot is the other issue. That run dumps cooled air into the attic and pulls insulation fiber and attic dust back toward the room.

We pull registers first and look. High-wall and floor registers in older Los Gatos stock. Ceiling registers in newer builds. Floor returns collect everything dropped on the carpet.

Older homes here run galvanized trunk with round branches in the attic. Cloth tape at the joints gives up and the wrap sheds. On pre-1975 plenums the tape can be asbestos-containing, so nobody brushes it. That gets tested and handled separately, off-site of our work.
